Finch Comments On State Of The State Statement from Assemblyman Gary Finch (R,C,I – Springport) January 9, 2013
Today, Governor Cuomo presented his priorities for the new legislative session – notably, continued progress on economic development, enhancing our state education system and reforming gun laws.
I share the Governor’s view that the state must not raise taxes and remain focused on Upstate job growth.
The Governor proposed several major reforms to education, including extending the school day, shifting the focus to early childhood education and providing incentives for high-performing teachers in order to give our children a world-class education.
Finally, Governor Cuomo spoke of reforming gun laws. In doing so, it is imperative that we remember the court-affirmed constitutional rights of every New Yorker. It is essential to stop the illegal trafficking and sale of all types of guns in New York State. I hope the Governor will consider a comprehensive approach that includes mental health concerns and an examination of the media our children are exposed to. In addition, the proposal by the Governor was expressed very generally, and we need to ensure we have concrete information on the effects of any new legislation before we make an informed vote.
