A Statement by Assemblyman Gary D. Finch (R,C,I-Springport)

Three weeks ago, Sheldon Silver claimed that an ongoing ethics probe would not keep him from overseeing the work of our chamber.

He was, emphatically, wrong.

Since then, the speaker has been arrested. He has lost the confidence of his majority delegation, a group of legislators aimlessly adrift in a sea of competing ambitions and personal advancement.

We have not passed any bills. All the body has done is re-elect the speaker, a measure that I voted against. Majority members have not even been assigned committee chairmanships. There is no legislative infrastructure for productivity or progress.

My message to the members of the Assembly Majority Conference is simple: it is time to cut ties with Sheldon Silver. It is time to coalesce around a speaker who can restore order.

I came to Albany to advocate for the hardworking families in my community. I did not come here to watch desperate power grabs and political infighting.
